First Look: Olivia Colman Transforms into Madame Thénardier for 'Les Misérables'

2019 looks set to be Olivia Colman's year. Or at least, another year the Night Manager actress can rack up alongside her already outstanding 2011, 2013 and 2016.

She's received rave reviews for her performance in The Favourite, is set to replace Claire Foy as the Queen in The Crown, and now we've got a sneak peek of her in character as Madame Thénardier in an ambitious new adaptation of Les Misérables.

We wonder if she got any tips from her The Crown co-star Helena Bonham Carter, who played the same character in the 2012 movie adaptation of Victor Hugo's 19th century novel.

This new version adapts Hugo's book into a six-part drama series, although with none of the songs made famous by the long-running musical. The BBC also released photos yesterday (October 15) of Dominic West as Jean Valjean and David Oyelowo as Inspector Javert, pictured below, as well as Lily Collins as Fantine, and BAFTA-winning Murdered by My Father star Adeel Akhtar as Madame Thénardier's husband Monsieur Thénardier.

The new images also show Josh O'Connor (God's Own Country, and another of Olivia and Helena's fellow cast members in the revamped The Crown) as Marius Pontmercy and Ellie Bamber (The Nutcracker and the Four Realms) as Cosette.

The new series has been written by Andrew Davies, he of House of Cards and War & Peace fame, not to mention Pride and Prejudice (yes, that one). Now, we don't like to start rumors, but that sure looks like a pond behind Marius.

Les Misérables will air on PBS Masterpiece in the U.S. some time next year.
