Over the summer, Paul Rudd announced he'd be joining the next installment of Ghostbusters. That was surprising in itself, and even more surprising, the first look trailer is already ready to go.

Writer-director Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a direct follow-up to 1989's Ghostbusters 2, picking up 30 years later. Rudd plays a high school science teacher. In the below clip, he points out that their small town is nowhere near a tectonic plate, but is shaking on a daily basis. What's that about?

Rudd's character has his suspicions and shows some of his students footage from the 1980s when NYC was overrun with ghosts, which includes the original Ghostbusters confidently walking the streets. That leaves the looming question: if there's something strange in their neighborhood, who are they gonna call?? 

Two of his students (McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard) are new to town, and it turns out they are the grandchildren of a Ghostbuster, now deceased. Possibly the teens inherited the science gene and "ain't afraid of no ghosts."

Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson are set to appear in the movie, reprising their original roles, but it's not clear in what capacity. We can also look for original cast members Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts.

We see a proton pack, the Ectomobile, a very quick glimpse of Slimer, but other than that, this first look feels very non-Ghostbusters. Reitman, who's known for rite of passage movies like 2007's Juno and 2009's Up in the Air, may have wanted to take a step away from the originals and make it his own.

And, who knows, maybe the iconic theme song by Ray Parker Jr. will pop up at some point.
