First Look: Sir Patrick Stewart Reprises Iconic Role in 'Star Trek: Picard'

Sir Patrick Stewart's eagerly-anticipated Star Trek spin-off series finally has an official title: Star Trek: Picard!

Favoring a "keep it simple" approach, the title references the name of Stewart's iconic character Jean-Luc Picard, whom he played in the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series from 1987-1994 and in four Star Trek movies released between 1994 and 2002.

Star Trek: Picard will air on the CBS All Access streaming service later this year. Speaking a few months ago, showrunner Alex Kurtzman revealed that the series will see Picard dealing with the aftermath of a supernova that destroyed the planet Romulus and sent Spock and Nero back in time through a black hole.

Kurtzman also described Picard’s life as “radically altered” by the supernova, and said of Stewart returning to the role: "He threw down an amazing gauntlet and said, ‘If we do this, I want it to be so different, I want it to be both what people remember but also not what they’re expecting at all, otherwise why do it?'”
