'Gavin and Stacey' Co-Creator Ruth Jones Gives Update on Show's Future
James Corden and Ruth Jones' beloved sitcom Gavin and Stacey has returned for a one-off holiday special in the U.K., where it became the most-watched TV program of Christmas Day with an average audience of 11.6 million.
The show's first episode since 2010 ended on a cliffhanger, and Jones – who plays Nessa in the series – has given an update on whether Gavin and Stacey fans can expect any more episodes given Corden's busy schedule hosting The Late Late Show in Los Angeles.
"It is so complicated for me and James to get together to write," she told The Sun. "I do say never say never, as while we did make it work, that was after three years of trying to find time when we could sit down and write it."
"Obviously with the way [the episode] ends, there is room for more," she added. "It’s a shame we didn’t have more time when we were writing so we could have written more, then have it all ready to go. But it was such a challenge to get that special filmed."
Corden told fans on Twitter last night that he and Jones were watching the episode together as it aired in the U.K.

The sitcom originally ran for three seasons plus a Christmas Special between 2007 and 2010, airing in the U.S. on BBC America. It followed a long-distance relationship that blossomed between Gavin (Mat Horne), a young man living in Essex near London, and Stacey (Joanna Page), a young woman from the Welsh seaside resort of Barry Island. The ways in which their relationship affected their close-knit family and friends was also a major part of the show's warm and relatable charm.
Every key cast member returned for the special, with the exception of the late Margaret John, who played Stacey's scene-stealing, rather salty neighbor Doris. The veteran Welsh actress passed away in 2011 at the age of 84, and Corden and Jones dedicated the special to her memory.
The Gavin and Stacey 2019 Christmas Special can be found over at BritBox in the U.S.
