British actor Will Sharpe is currently delighting viewers in The White Lotus – he plays Ethan, a successful tech entrepreneur who has a complicated and difficult-to-decipher relationship with college pal Cameron (Theo James). It's perhaps his most high-profile role yet, but hardly the only highlight on his varied résumé. So, with the series about to come to an end, here's a guide to some of Sharpe's other career highlights (and a couple of personal details, too).
1. He's a BAFTA-winning actor.
Sharpe won the Best Supporting Actor award in 2020 for his hilarious performance in Giri/Haji, a BBC gangster drama set in London and Tokyo. Sharpe supplies light relief in the eight-part series as Rodney, a self-confident sex worker with a flair for witty one-liners.
2. He put in a stint on Casualty.
From 2009 to 2010, Sharpe appeared in 51 episodes of the BBC's long-running medical drama as Yuki Reid, a talented junior doctor who could sometimes lose his temper. To this day, Yuki remains a fondly remembered character among Casualty fans.
3. His partner is a fellow actor: Sophia Di Martino.
Sharpe told London's Evening Standard that he and Di Martino met while working together on Casualty. They've now been a couple for 13 years and have two children, who are three years old and one. You may recognize Di Martino as Sylvie from Loki or Lily from AMC's Into the Badlands.
4. He starred in the legal-themed BBC sitcom Defending the Guilty.
Sharpe played a junior barrister in this infectious sitcom co-starring opposite Katharine Parkinson as the senior lawyer showing him the ropes. Defending the Guilty premiered on the BBC in 2018 – a second season was ordered to begin with, but sadly later canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
5. He wrote, directed, and starred in his own sitcom: Flowers.
Centering on the strange and dysfunctional Flowers family, it was definitely a shade or two darker than most TV comedies. The cast was led by Olivia Colman and Killing Eve's Julian Barratt, with Sharpe, Di Martino, and Harriet Walter in supporting roles. It ran for two seasons on Channel 4 in the U.K. and streaming service Seeso in the U.S., concluding in 2018.
6. He worked with Colman again on the true-crime miniseries Landscapers.
Written by Colman's husband Ed Sinclair, this Sky Atlantic/HBO series told the surprising and very tragic story of the 1998 murders of William and Patricia Wycherley. Colman and David Thewlis starred as Susan and Christopher Edwards, the couple behind the murders, with Sharpe directing all four episodes.
6. He also directed Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.
Released in 2021, this biographical movie shone a spotlight on Louis Wain, a 20th-century artist known for his distinctive drawings of wide-eyed cats. Discussing what drew him to the project, Sharpe told That Shelf: "I read about his life and I think I was just filled with admiration for him as a human being, almost more than as a historical figure. I mean, first of all, he’s known for being the reason why people in the U.K. keep cats as pets. Before he started creating these cute, funny cat pictures, they were basically just seen as vermin."
