7 Great TV Shows Set and Filmed in Northern Ireland

We've already celebrated great shows made in Wales and filmed in Scotland, so now it's Northern Ireland's turn. These seven series aren't just shot in the province, but set there too, and they're also super-easy to find on streaming services.

Let's do some armchair traveling:
1. The Fall
This crime drama is a real game of cat and mouse. Over three seasons, Gillian Anderson plays Stella Gibson, a senior London police officer seconded to Belfast to catch a serial killer who's targeting young women. He is Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan), a seemingly mild grief counselor, but of course Gibson doesn't know this yet.

2. Bloodlands
One of Northern Ireland's most famous actors, James Nesbitt, leads this BBC crime drama available in the U.S. on Acorn TV. He plays DCI Tom Brannick, an experienced officer who believes a crim's car pulled from the sea is connected to a spate of disappearances that happened two decades earlier. Strangford Lough in the east of Northern Ireland provides the lovely scenery.

3. The Secret
Nesbitt also heads up this true-crime miniseries, which is available on Acorn TV, too. This time around, he's on the other side of the tracks, giving a sinister performance as notorious Northern Irish murderer Colin Howell. The story unfolds in Castlerock, a pretty seaside village on Northern Ireland's north coast.

4. Derry Girls
Set in the mid-1990s, this infectious sitcom follows a posse of teenage girls (and one "wee English fella") growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland's second-largest city. It's a warm and witty show set against the poignant backdrop of the final years of The Troubles, a bitterly felt internal conflict in the province. The cracking cast includes Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan.

5. Three Families
Based on true stories, this two-part drama shines a spotlight on three women and their families who were affected by Northern Ireland's abortion laws before decriminalization in 2019. Available in the U.S. on Sundance Now, it's a profoundly moving watch with a strong cast that includes Being Human's Sinéad Keenan and Merlin's Colin Morgan.

6. My Mother and Other Strangers
This BBC/PBS Masterpiece drama is set in 1943 in the fictional Northern Irish village of Moybeg. It's loosely inspired by real events, though, as it follows a close-knit rural community who welcome thousands of American servicemen into their lives during World War II. The cast includes Enola Holmes' Hattie Morahan and Killing Eve's Owen McConnell.

7. Hope Street
This BBC/BritBox co-production premiered earlier this year. Filmed in the small town of Donaghadee, but set in the fictional town of Port Devine, it follows an English cop (Amara Karan) who's sent to Northern Ireland for a mysterious but very important reason. Many of the cast members hail from the Donaghadee area, adding to its authentic feel.
