Iconic British Satirical Show 'Spitting Image' Is Being Revived by BritBox

Iconic British satirical series Spitting Image is being revived after nearly 25 years.

Spitting Image, which used puppets to poke fun at political figures, members of the Royal Family and celebrities in the '80s and '90s, will return on BritBox later this year.

The show's co-creator Roger Law will oversee the new series, which is the first original commission from BritBox. "The new Spitting Image will be global through a uniquely British eye," Law said in a statement, adding that "it will be more outrageous, audacious, and salacious than the previous incarnation."

Law also gave a few clues as to which famous figures will be satirized in the new series, saying: "We will take back control from the likes of BoJo, Trump, Harry and Meghan, Elon Musk, and Kim Kardashian. We will be dazzled and amazed by Jurgen Klopp and Beyoncé, we will have regular weather updates from our roving reporter Greta Thunberg. The timing is right, the puppets are ready, the people have spoken."

Spitting Image originally ran on the U.K. network ITV between 1984 and 1996, winning 10 BAFTA TV Awards and two Emmys for its biting topical comedy. Below: relive a classic sketch featuring then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was portrayed by the show as a super-domineering leader who would refer to her Cabinet members as "the vegetables."

The new Spitting Image has already been commissioned for two seasons and will be made by Avalon, the production company behind Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. BritBox has confirmed that the first season will premiere in the fall and the second will follow in 2021. Bring it on!
