Is a ‘Baby Driver’ Sequel Already in the Works?

The action-packed Baby Driver has just hit theaters last week (June 28), but there's already talk of a possible sequel.

The innovative movie from writer-director (and longtime Simon Pegg collaborator) Edgar Wright got off to a raring start at the box office last weekend. It currently holds a 97 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, too. So it makes sense that Wright is already being quizzed about a second ride for Baby (Ansel Elgort), the lightning-quick getaway driver who drowns out his tinnitus with several iPods' worth of seriously bangin' tunes.

"The studio have asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to because I think there's somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters," Wright told Empire, super-encouragingly. "Baby has got to a new place."

Though Wright previously directed the "Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy," a loose series of three Brit-flicks that he co-wrote with Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, The World's End), he's never actually made a straight sequel before. But he reckons Baby Driver could be different.

"Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there's somewhere deeper for them to go," the filmmaker explained. "I think with Baby Driver, there's more that you can do in that realm, and I sort of have an idea that if you did another [film] you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he's not the apprentice anymore."

Baby Driver also benefits from supporting performances from the likes of Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, and Downton Abbey's Lily James. Wright has yet to discuss how (or whether) their characters could be brought back for a second ride. But in principle, the prospect of a Baby Driver 2 sounds pretty exhilarating to us.

Do you think another Baby Driver movie is a good idea? Which cast members would you like to see coming back?
