Guy Ritchie is at it again, set to direct and co-write a forthcoming action-thriller, reports ComingSoon.net.
He’s known to collaborate with actors more than once, but on his latest project, The Interpreter, he’s cast Jake Gyllenhaal, which will mark their first time working together.
He’s also changing things up in terms of the storyline. Instead of drawing on the mafia — which we’ve seen in some of his earlier work — he’s looking to the military for inspiration.
Gyllenhaal will take the lead, as a character named Sergeant John Kinley. Kinley is on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan, and finds himself partnered with an interpreter, Ahmed, to survey the area.
When their unit is attacked, Kinley and Ahmed are the only survivors.
According to the description, Kinley is injured, with Ahmed then putting his own life at risk to carry the sergeant to safety.
Back in the U.S. and recovering, Kinley learns that Ahmed didn’t make it out and is still trapped in a war zone.
In an attempt to “repay his debt,” Kinley returns to Afghanistan to rescue his now friend.
Ritchie is co-writing the script with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, who he worked with on 2019’s The Gentlemen.
Production will begin at the start of 2022 in Spain.
