If the cliffhanger ending of Gavin & Stacey's Christmas special left you wondering, "What's occurring next?," today brings some promising news.

Co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones have issued a joint statement after it was announced that the episode has now been watched by an enormous audience of 18.5 million in the U.K.

According to the BBC, this makes it the biggest BBC TV program outside of sporting and national events since records began in 2002.

"It’s mind-blowing that so many people watched our show – we still can’t get our heads round it, what a massive compliment," Corden and Jones said in response. "We are indebted to the BBC for their incredible support but most importantly to those 18.5 million viewers for watching."

They then added, referencing the cliffhanger ending and perhaps hinting at a potential new episode: "We just hope one day we can let them know what Smithy said next..."

That's got to be a good sign, right? If you haven't seen the Christmas special yet, it's available in the U.S. on BritBox. It's the first new episode of Gavin & Stacey since 2010, when the show ended its three-season run on BBC One in the U.K. and BBC America in the U.S.

Alongside James Corden, Ruth Jones, Mathew Horne (Gavin) and Joanna Page (Stacey), every key cast member returned for the Christmas special, with the exception of the late Margaret John, who played Stacey's salty neighbor Doris. The veteran Welsh actress passed away in 2011 at the age of 84, and Corden and Jones dedicated the special to her memory.
