James Corden has confirmed he will end his tenure as presenter of The Late Late Show in 12 months' time.
The Brit has signed a deal to host the show for another year, meaning he will bow out ahead of summer 2023. In an interview with Deadline, Corden said, "It's been a really hard decision to leave because I'm so immensely proud of the show." But it's not over yet, with him saying, "I'm thrilled to be extending [for a year]. I always thought I'd do it for five years and then leave, and then I stayed on. I've really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure."
By the time he bows out in 2023, Corden will have actually put in eight years on the show. During that time, he's built a reputation for producing viral moments, especially with the enormously popular Carpool Karaoke segment. The episode featuring Adele has now amassed more than 250 million YouTube views.
Corden hasn't said what he intends to focus on post-Late Late Show, but he certainly has many strings to his bow. As an actor, he has appeared in movies including Cats, The Prom and Into the Woods, and won a Tony for his stage role in One Man, Two Guvnors.
Of course, he also co-created and starred in the much-loved sitcom Gavin and Stacey, which returned for a one-off special in 2019. That episode ended on a major cliffhanger, so Corden and co-creator Ruth Jones could well be eyeing a way to tie up the loose ends. For now, we wish him luck with his last year on The Late Late Show.
