James Corden was asked a tricky question on a recent episode of The Late Late Show: does he regret doing the Cats movie?

The big screen adaptation of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's record-breaking stage musical was panned by critics when it opened in December, and proceeded to flop at the box office. It's grossed just $73 million worldwide – less than its estimated $93 million production budget.

Corden and co-star Rebel Wilson poked fun at the movie at this month's Academy Awards by coming on stage dressed as cats, but Corden gave a classy response when guest Justin Bieber asked him, "On a scale of one to ten, how much do you regret doing Cats?" during the show's skit, "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts."

"Well here’s the thing, I had the loveliest time making that film. It took me six days and I loved every single second of it," he said. "So I think you’ve got to be careful not to… You’ve got to decide things on your own personal experience, and I had a really great time."

The actor and host then added: "So, I don’t regret doing it all, because I decided to do it in the same way I decided to do many things. Some have worked, some haven’t. So I’m going to put [my regrets] at a solid 5 (out of 10)."

He later revised that figure to "4.5 out of 10."

Corden previously revealed that he hasn't actually watched the Cats movie, in which he co-starred opposite Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, and Ray Winstone.

"There doesn’t seem to be much reason to," he told Variety on the red carpet at the Academy Awards. “You’ve got to be really careful sometimes to distance your own experience from whether something is successful. My experience was joyous. I had a really really really nice time. I might catch a bit of it on a plane. But… I can’t see any reason to watch it really.”

Of course, Corden has plenty to celebrate, including the ongoing success of Carpool Karaoke and The Late Late Show, the upcoming Cinderella movie he's producing for Disney, and the enormous success of the Gavin & Stacey reunion special, which is available to watch in the U.S. on BritBox.
