Kelly Macdonald is set to star in the forthcoming WWII drama Operation Mincemeat, which is based on true events. While the story revolves around duping the Nazis, there’s still time for romance.
Macdonald portrays a secretary named Jean Leslie, working for MI5. And apparently she gets caught up in a love triangle involving British officer Ewen Montagu and MI5 agent Charles Cholmondeley, portrayed by Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen, respectively.
When speaking to the Radio Times, the actress was asked what it was like being “caught between two Darcys,” referring to Jane Austen‘s Pride and Prejudice character Mr. Darcy. She seems to have enjoyed it, saying, “Yeah. I mean, it was quite good for the ego having all of these men sort of trying to get my attention.”
All joking aside, Macdonald has worked with both actors prior, which may have come into play when stepping into this role. Macdonald explains the past experiences, saying, “But yeah, so I've worked with Colin, this is the third film I've done with Colin. I think there's a sporting term for that. A hat trick? I don't know.”
The two earlier films include 1999’s My Life So Far and 2005’s Nanny McPhee.
She's also worked with Macfadyen, saying, “And Matthew played my husband in Anna Karenina, or I played his wife."
This is the first time Firth and Macfadyen are working together, which Macdonald elaborates on, saying, “What was really lovely actually was they didn't know each other. They both played Mr. Darcy, obviously, but they hadn't met each other before. And it was very sweet, they hit it off immediately. And it was just this very sweet relationship, this friendship started between them.”
