This is not a drill: Kristen Stewart has been cast as the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

She's signed up to star in Spencer, a biopic scripted by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and directed by Pablo Larraín, who previously made Jackie, the acclaimed movie about Jackie Kennedy starring Natalie Portman.

Spencer – whose title refers to the late Princess's name before she was married, Lady Diana Spencer – will take place over a single three-day weekend in the early '90s. During one of her final Christmas vacations at Sandringham, the Royal Family's country estate in Norfolk, eastern England, the Princess realizes her marriage to Prince Charles isn't working.

Charles, heir to the British throne, married Diana in 1981 in a lavish ceremony watched by an estimated global audience of 750 million. The couple, who raised two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, separated in 1992 and finalized their divorce four years later.

Diana, known for her charity work raising awareness of HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and landmines, died in a car crash in Paris, France in 1997. She was 36 years old.

Shooting on Spencer is due to start in early 2021, Deadline reports. Larraín told the outlet: “Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life. We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the Queen. She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles."

On Twitter, the response to Stewart's casting has been somewhat mixed, but many movie fans are convinced she can capture Diana's essence perfectly.

A previous biopic of the so-called "People's Princess," Diana starring Naomi Watts, was released in 2013 to largely very negative reviews.
