Lashana Lynch, Joanna Scanlan, and Sir Kenneth Branagh were among the winners at the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday night (March 13), while The Power of the Dog was named Best Film.
Lynch, best known for her role in Bond movie No Time to Die, won the EE Rising Star Award. In a stirring speech, she credited her "working-class foundation" with teaching her everything she "needed to know about failure, about 'no's and what 'no's mean, and about how to celebrate your yeses."
"Now I get to celebrate the 'yes' that I never expected," she added touchingly.
Scanlan, who stars opposite Bradley Walsh in the hit Acorn TV drama series The Larkins, took home the Leading Actress prize for her performance in British indie film After Love. After beginning her speech with a self-deprecating "Come on!," she treated the audience to a few words in her native Welsh language.
Though Branagh missed out on the Best Director prize to The Power of the Dog's Jane Campion and the Best Screenplay accolade to Licorice Pizza's Paul Thomas Anderson, his semi-autobiographical movie Belfast was named Outstanding British Film. "All hail the streaming revolution, but all hail the big screen too, it's alive, and long may they live together," he said during his speech.
Other winners at the BAFTA Film Awards, hosted by Rebel Wilson at London's Royal Albert Hall, included Will Smith for King Richard, Ariana DeBose for West Side Story and Troy Kotsur for CODA. The ceremony was shown in the U.S. on BritBox and in the U.K. on BBC One.
