Today brings pretty encouraging news for Mamma Mia! fans. Ol Parker, director of the second movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, has spoken positively about the prospect of a third film.
"Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always plans for it to be a trilogy," he told Screen Rant. "That's all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn't it be lovely?"
Parker is absolutely spot-on about the first film's financial success. Released in 2008, it grossed a massive $611 million at the global box office. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which followed a full decade later in 2018, didn't perform quite as impressively, but still raked in a very hefty $402 million.
The Mamma Mia! movies are also known to be especially popular projects for their cast members. As Digital Spy reports, Pierce Brosnan spoke positively about making a third movie back in October, saying: "It's criminal how much fun you have on that movie. I think everybody would be in... I'm sure there's some plans."
And back in 2020, when Dame Julie Walters told The Times that she would be taking a step back from acting following a cancer scare, she singled out a third Mamma Mia! movie as a project she would make a special exception for.
In the meantime, you can whet your appetite by watching Amanda Seyfried talk about her Mamma Mia! tattoo on The Graham Norton Show.
