Martin Freeman stars in the fast-paced drama The Responder, which was released in the U.K. via BBC One this past January. The series is now headed to the U.S., which you can look for over at BritBox as of May 3.
Freeman stars as a police officer, who's teamed up with a rookie cop, played by Adelayo Adedayo. In the official trailer, his partner notices something is going on with him, saying, “He’s a mess. It’s important work.” It doesn’t seem like he’s reliable, at least not to her.
While he may be struggling, he may still be good at his job. The first look trailer provides a hint at what to expect:

The official synopsis helps clarify what’s going on in the six-part series: “This distinctive new drama, inspired by the real-life experiences of former police officer and writer Tony Schumacher, offers a rare glimpse into the heart of society’s dark and gritty underbelly. Night after night, Chris (Freeman) drives a frontline response vehicle in his fragmented home town of Liverpool where he faces crime, violence and addiction on the streets. All the while, he is battling personal demons that threaten to destabilize his work, his marriage and his mental health. When Chris is forced to take on new rookie partner Rachel (Adedayo) both soon discover that survival in this high-pressure, relentless, twilight world depends on them either helping or destroying each other. The action plays out over one week of increasingly tense, life-changing night shifts. From the depths of helplessness and despair, with his own family slipping away from him, Chris clings to the idea of saving the life of a young addict trapped in a deadly dilemma. If he can save her, maybe he can save himself and rediscover what it means to be a police officer.”
Freeman released a statement when the casting was first announced, saying, “Tony Schumacher’s script for The Responder resonated with me immediately. It felt like nothing that I’d read or seen.”
