Mena Massoud (Aladdin, Reprisal) is to star as British boxing legend "Prince" Naseem Hamed in the big-screen biopic Giant.
Deadline reports that House of the Dragon's Paddy Considine will co-star as Hamed's Irish trainer, Brendan Ingle. The biopic is being written and directed by Rowan Athale, who wrote two episodes of AMC's Gangs of London.
Sylvester Stallone – creator of the iconic boxing franchise Rocky – will serve as one of the movie's producers. "I have wanted to bring this movie to screen for many years. The story of fabled boxing trainer Brendan Ingle and his tempestuous relationship with protégé “Prince” Naseem is both legendary and truly cinematic," said Athale.
"It's exciting, necessary, hilarious, and heartbreaking," he added, "and to be making this movie with the incomparable Paddy Considine and Mena Massoud, and with the support of the one and only Sylvester Stallone and his Balboa Productions team, is a dream come true."
Known for his playfully cocky persona, Hamed is definitely a character worthy of a biopic. Born in a working-class neighborhood of Sheffield in northern England, his natural talent and guidance from Ingle combined to make him a world featherweight champion several times over.
Along the way, he overcame racism and Islamophobia to become an icon of the 1990s "Cool Britannia" era, and retired in 2002 having won 36 of his 37 pro fights.
Do you think the "Prince" Naseem Hamed biopic sounds like a knockout?
