Michael Sheen and Sharon Horgan have signed up to star in Best Interests, a four-part British drama series exploring incredibly sensitive issues relating to disability, reports BBC.
Written by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Help), the BBC series will center on a married couple with two daughters, Katie (Alison Oliver) and Marnie (Niamh Moriarty). Marnie has a life-threatening condition that compels doctors to conclude it would be in her "best interests" to die. However, her loving family disagree for obvious reasons, leading to a legal battle to determine who gets to decide what her "best interests" really are.
"Best Interests cases are both compelling and revealing," Thorne said in a statement. "Our country has a very troubled relationship with disability and these cases put a spotlight on that. But our drama is first and foremost a love story and it needs incredible actors to bring it to life. Sharon Horgan and Michael Sheen lead a company of ridiculous talents that pull you into the most interesting of places."
The cast also includes Lucian Msamati (Gangs of London), Noma Dumezweni (The Undoing), and Pippa Haywood (Bodyguard). Also co-starring is Mat Fraser, who curated BBC America's CripTales series of six short films, each of which was written, directed, and performed by a person living with disabilities. Thorne wrote one of these films, "Hamish," which follows a young man who explores his sexuality after being given his first self-operated wheelchair.
Horgan shared her thoughts on the project, saying, "Best Interests broke me when I first read the script and then again after talking with Jack about it. Covid seems to have shone a closer light on the desperate inequalities that exist for our disabled community so this felt very timely."
Filming is already underway on the series, which will air in the U.K. next year on BBC One. There's no word yet on where Best Interests might be shown in North America.
