We already know Kumail Nanjiani is a big fan of Four Weddings and a Funeral, but his love of British films seems to extend to a much lesser-known indie flick.

Variety reports the Big Sick star has signed up to co-write and star in a TV series based on My Beautiful Launderette, the 1985 film that starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Gordon Warnecke.

Kumail will play Gordon's character of Omar, a young British Pakistani man who falls in love with his old school friend and punk Johnny, a part that would be Daniel's breakthrough role.

Not only that, but the film's frank exploration of LGBT and immigration issues meant it also became a landmark movie for many people, with the British Film Institute naming it the 50th best British film ever made.

No pressure then, Kumail.

My Beautiful Launderette is the latest in a slew of classic films to be given the TV treatment, not least Kumail's fave Four Weddings and Funeral, a TV version of which is currently being developed by Mindy Kaling.

There's no need to panic that our favorite films are being tinkered with, however. Author Hanif Kureishi, who wrote the original Launderette screenplay, will serve as executive producer, just as Richard Curtis is overseeing Four Weddings' transfer to TV. Hanif will be joined by Alec Berg, the producer behind sitcom Silicon Valley, in which Kumail stars as programmer Dinesh.

The film's action will presumably be transferred from south London to America, unless Kumail is about to unveil a British accent. Though if his recent admission on The Tonight Show is anything to go by, he's put in a lot of practice copying Hugh Grant.
