You can look for Colin Firth in the forthcoming true crime series The Staircase, premiering on May 5. A first look trailer came out fairly recently, but the new trailer has… more.

The grim story begins with a death. We see Firth as family man Michael Peterson calling 911 when he finds his wife dead at the bottom of the staircase. He claims she fell. But, as the investigation proceeds, the autopsy reveals her injuries do not matchup with his account of what led to this.

Toni Collette portrays his wife, Kathleen. We see her as a loving mother, who is supportive to her children, building them up. She’s also devoted to her husband, fighting for their marriage when things become tense.

The new trailer takes us even further into the storyline, with Peterson on trial and the once loving and committed family now divided:

We still really don’t know what happened, and it doesn’t seem like anyone else involved does, either. The only person who can put it together is Peterson. As the series rolls out, we shall see if he comes clean or continues to profess his innocence.

In addition to Firth and Collette, the series also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, Tim Guinee, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Odessa Young, Parker Posey and Vincent Vermignon.

You can look for The Staircase over at HBO Max on May 5.
