Donald Sutherland takes the title role in the forthcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s novella Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, published in 2020, reports ComingSoon.net.
The story follows Mr. Harrigan and his teenage neighbor friend Craig (Jaeden Martell). In the trailer, we hear Mr. Harrigan say to him, “You are a far different person now. Look who you were when we met. Why do you continue to come here?” with the teen replying, “Because I enjoy our time together.”
There is such a sweetness about this, but it’s short-lived, as it turns out the teen is being bullied at school. He goes to Mr. Harrigan for advice on how to handle the situation.

Later in the clip, we learn Mr. Harrigan passes away and when attending the funeral service, Craig puts Mr. Harrigan’s phone in his jacket pocket before being buried.
As people do, Craig still “talks” to his late friend and even calls him to hear Mr. Harrigan's recorded voice and leave a message. On one level, he’s speaking to the universe, but we highly doubt he expected… a response.
That’s when we know this is a Stephen King story:

While Mr. Harrigan may not have been able to fully help Craig with the bullies during his lifetime, he may be able to after his death. It’s just a matter of whether or not Craig considers this help.
Mr. Harrigan's Phone is set to premiere over at Netflix on October 5.
