The forthcoming biopic Emily takes us back to 19th century England, telling the story of how Emily Brontë came to be a world-renowned author. Emma Mackey, who you may know from Sex Education, is set to take on the title role, reports ComingSoon.net.
In the newly released trailer, we meet Emily before she’s an established author. She’s still in school and scheduled to become a teacher. But, we hear her say, “Do you think I can be a writer? I have lots of stories.”
In the below clip, we hear a voice off camera ask her, “How did you write Wuthering Heights?” That is quite a question -- and we can imagine difficult to answer -- that is where the movie comes in:
Wuthering Heights was published in 1847. Emily was 29 at the time, which in that era, was considered “over the hill.” On top of that, women were not encouraged to work, but instead to marry, and take care of the home. Brontë was before her time.
The official synopsis helps outline what’s to come: “The film tells the imagined life of one of the world’s most famous authors, Emily Brontë. It features Emily, a rebel and misfit who finds her voice and writes the literary classic Wuthering Heights. The film explores the relationships that inspired her – her raw, passionate sisterhood with Charlotte and Anne; her first aching, forbidden love for Weightman, and her care for her maverick brother whom she idolizes.”
Just in the clip alone, there are some inspiring moments and words, with her standing at the edge of a cliff yelling out into the air, “Freedom of thought!”
If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration in movie form, this may be it. Emily premieres on October 14.
Does this make you want to crack open a copy of Wuthering Heights for a read?
