In 2021, Olivia Colman and Colin Firth starred opposite each other in Mothering Light. The two are set to work together once again, reuniting for Empire of Light, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Filmmaker Sam Mendes is behind the camera on this project, which is based in 1980s England and revolves around a “picturehouse,” which is an old-timey term for movie theater.
It’s not just Colman and Firth, you can also look for Toby Jones, who portrays a film projector operator. He kicks off the new trailer, saying in a voiceover, “Film. It’s just static frames, with darkness in between.” But, as he points out,” If I run the film at 24 frames per second, it creates an illusion of motion.”
The cinema does play a character in this movie, but the characters themselves are looking for love:

Colman takes on the role of Hilary, who works in the cinema. She develops a relationship with her younger coworker, Stephen, portrayed by Michael Ward. In the above trailer, we see Hilary beaming with happiness, coupled with moments of sadness. Stephen on the other hand, seems perplexed.
We suppose that’s where Mendes comes in, to fill in the blanks. He not only directs, but also wrote the script.
And, rounding out the cast and the story, we can look for Firth as Mr. Ellis. It’s not quite clear how he fits into the story, but we're looking forward to finding out.
Empire of Light is set to premiere on December 9.
