Oscar Isaac (Life Itself) has signed on for a new movie, set to star in The Card Counter, reports Deadline. He takes on the role of a former serviceman, who has a penchant for gambling. After ten years in prison, he's learned to count cards.
Gambling can be a dangerous game in itself, but it sounds like there is a lot more at stake than cashing out. Isaac's character, William Tell, is approached by a young man named Cirk (Tye Sheridan), who is seeking revenge on a mutual enemy. While Tell comes across as troubled, chasing away his demons one card game at a time, he handles the suggestion reasonably and doesn't want to get involved.
Instead, he takes the young man on a road trip, traveling from casino to casino, with the plan to compete in the World Series of Poker.
In the newly released trailer, Tell sees a chance at redemption by helping Cirk get past his grudge:
Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) wrote and directed The Card Counter.
Schrader's more recent work includes 2017's First Reformed, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
The Card Counter, which premieres on September 10, also stars Willem Dafoe and Tiffany Haddish.
You can look for Isaac in 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and in the forthcoming Dune remake as Duke Leto Atreides.
