Tom Hiddleston is set to star in the forthcoming feature film The Essex Serpent, based on Sarah Perry’s 2016 novel. Hiddleston is teaming up with Claire Danes to bring the story to the screen.
Set in Victorian England, the story revolves around a mythical sea creature, with Hiddleston and Danes’ characters investigating. While the two are focused on the mystery at hand, there is room for romance. Hiddleston portrays Will Ransome, who is a man of God and married. Even so, he finds himself drawn to Danes’ character, Cora Seaborne.
We hear him say to her in the first look trailer, "I can't think clearly when I'm around you." Seaborne suggests he’s weak, with him responding, “Love is not weakness.”
It’s not just his personal feelings he's struggling with. He also doesn’t believe in the serpent, or that it’s “a symptom of the times” they are living in. Seaborne’s theories are based on research and she thinks it's an animal yet to be discovered.
The townspeople turn on Seaborne, saying it’s her who brought the serpent and trouble to their village.
The official description reads: "The Essex Serpent follows London widow Cora Seaborne who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms an unlikely bond with the village, but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature."
