Olivia Colman is up for Best Actress at Sunday night's Academy Awards; it's her third Oscar nomination in the last four years. To whet your appetite, we're taking a look back at some of her most memorable and hilarious acceptance speeches from over the years. Warning: Things do get kind of emotional at times.
1. Best Supporting Actress for Accused (Mo's Story) at the BAFTA TV Awards in 2013
Colman brings the house down here just by being herself. She thanks her drama teacher, Mr. Hands, which is a cute touch, as well as her parents for babysitting while she is out enjoying herself. Sweetly, she also vows to share her award with Anne-Marie Duff, her co-star in the BBC drama series Accused. "We're Ann M-Olivia Colmuff," she says playfully, drawing a big laugh from the audience.
2. Leading Actress for Broadchurch at the BAFTA TV Awards in 2014
Colman is so overcome with emotion that she can barely get her words out here. Thankfully, she gathers herself enough to thank her Broadchurch co-star David Tennant and salute fellow nominee Helena Bonham Carter. (A few years later, she and HBC would play on-screen sisters in The Crown.) Perhaps the most charming part comes when she randomly thanks her friend Merc just to make her laugh. It's classic Olivia Colman.
3. Best Supporting Actress for The Favourite at the British Independent Film Awards in 2018
Colman collects this award on behalf of her co-star Rachel Weisz: complete with a cardboard cut-out of her face! "She's sent me a thingy," Colman tells the audience before reading out an SMS that Weisz has sent her in advance. It's the sort of whimsical awards show moment that we can't imagine coming from anyone other than Colman.
4. Leading Actress for The Favourite at the BAFTA Film Awards in 2019
This speech is best described as "charmingly bumbling." Colman has made notes in advance, but has a little trouble reading them. As always, though, it's a beautifully sincere affair; we love the way she offers to share her award with The Favourite co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. "This isn't for the lead, it’s for a lead," she says, "and as far as I'm concerned, all three of us are the same and should be the lead. It's got my name on it but we can scratch in some others."
5. Best Actress for The Favourite at the Oscars in 2019
Colman begins this speech in the most British way imaginable, by saying: "Oooh, it's genuinely quite stressful!" Glenn Close had been the pre-show favorite to win Best Actress, so Colman's shock is entirely understandable. She proceeds to congratulate her kids for staying up late to watch her, then blows a raspberry when the teleprompter tells her to "wrap up." She ends in a very Olivia Colman way: by giving a shout-out to fellow nominee Lady Gaga.
6. Best Actress in a TV Drama for The Crown at the Golden Globes in 2020
We can always rely on Colman to say whatever pops into her head: she doesn't seem to have much of a filter, and it makes for a great speech. "I'd already got a little bit boozy," she confides midway through this one, "because I thought this [award] wasn't going to happen." It's another refreshingly genuine moment that underlines why she has become such an awards show MVP.
7. Lead Actress in a Drama for The Crown at the Emmys in 2021
Colman's most recent acceptance speech is an especially moving affair because she mentions that she lost her father during the pandemic. He "would have loved all of this," she tells the audience poignantly. She ends on a gracious high note by giving a sweet shout-out to fellow Emmy winner Michaela Coel. Never change, Olivia, you make us smile every time.
