'Paddington 2' Loses Its Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Following Negative Review
Paddington 2 has lost its perfect 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes after a negative review was added to the site.
The review for film-authority.com by critic Eddie Harrison argues that both Paddington movies lack the charm of the original books by Michael Bond.
"Over-confident, snide and sullen, this manky-looking bear bears little relation to the classic character," Harrison writes. "And viewers should be warned; this ain’t yo mamma’s Paddington bear, and it won’t be yours either."
Following the negative review, Paddington 2 is now just "99% fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, tying it with Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. According To The Hollywood Reporter, Citizen Kane lost its own "100% fresh" score in April after a solitary negative review from 1941 was rediscovered and added to the site.
After this happened, Paddington 2 could claim, for a time, to be "the greatest movie ever," at least in terms of Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
Released in 2017, Paddington 2 follows Ben Whishaw's furry hero as he is wrongly imprisoned for the theft of a unique pop-up book. Hugh Grant earned a BAFTA Film Award nomination for his performance as Phoenix Buchanan, a washed-up actor who crosses Paddington's path.
In February, Variety reported that development had officially begun on a third Paddington movie.
