Paul Rudd Announces He's Joining 'Ghostbusters': 'I Nearly Slimed Myself'

"If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?" Paul Rudd!

The seemingly never-aging star got the call from director Jason Reitman to join the 2020 movie, which he announced in a video in front of the iconic NYC firehouse seen in the 1980s movies.

Rudd took it upon himself to announce his joining the franchise, saying, "It's such an epic film. I love it. I'm a fan." His agent apparently called Reitman to investigate a role and according to Rudd, asked, "Who you gonna call!?" Rudd goes on to say, "I can't wait to join the cast this fall for Ghostbusters."

The new iteration is being referred to as the Untitled Ghostbusters Project for now. In the movie — which comes out next summer — Rudd is set to play a teacher in the film. Possibly a teacher-turned-ghostbuster? It's not quite clear in what capacity he's joining the franchise. Reitman talked about working with Rudd, releasing a statement saying: "I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for Wet Hot American Summer at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe,” reports Variety.

Paul Feig directed the 2016 reboot, starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones in the lead roles. Jason Reitman will take on directing duties for the next Ghostbusters. Reitman has Ghostbusters lineage, with his father, Ivan Reitman, directing the original Ghostbusters in 1984 and the sequel in 1989.

Reitman's movie is not a sequel to the 2016 movie. According to People magazine, the story will be set in the original universe that we first met the Ghostbusters, portrayed by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.

Reitman made the distinction between the two films, saying, "I have so much respect for what Paul (Feig) created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film.

We can also look for the return of original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Akyroyd and Sigourney Weaver.
