Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed that he is planning a spin-off movie after the popular TV series comes to an end.

It was announced yesterday that the sixth season of Knight's period crime drama has gone into production, and will be the show's last. Knight said in a BBC press release: "Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher."

He continued, "We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form."

Now Knight has expanded on what "another form" could mean, telling Deadline: "Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen."

Peaky Blinders, which stars Cillian Murphy and follows the fortunes of the powerful Shelby crime family from the end of World War One, premiered on BBC One in the U.K. and Netflix in the U.S. in 2019. A year earlier, Knight told Digital Spy he was planning a seven-year run for the series, and so the scrapped seventh season is presumably the "change of plan" he is now referring to.

"My ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars, so always I've wanted to end it with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in 1939," he said at the time.
