Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who you know as the creator and star of of the dark comedy Fleabag and the creator and first season showrunner for BBC America's Killing Eve, has a very inventive mind.

At yesterday's BAFTA TV Session, Waller-Bridge talked about turning to The Godfather, specifically The Godfather: Part II for inspiration, as reported by the RadioTimes.

At first glance, the two seem completely unrelated — a woman in her 30s looking for love in present-day London and a mobster family in 1940s New York — but we trust Waller-Bridge to tie the two together.

And, that's what she did, explaining how The Godfather helped her work on some self doubt she was struggling with.

1972's The Godfather was such an iconic film, and Waller-Bridge talked about how the follow-up movie in 1974  "upped its game."

During the BAFTA talk, Waller-Bridge said, "The Godfather. The Godfather 2… I was really worried about not having a story for season two, and it not being as good season one. I honestly really did try to back out a couple of times, and everyone was very supportive and enthusiastic, and also would really listen to [me]."

It's natural to have nerves, but we're so glad she didn't back out.

She went on to say, "Actually, I took a lot of inspiration from how Godfather upped its game for Godfather 2."

Waller-Bridge realizes tying the two together may seem like a disconnect, saying, "That sounds sort of ludicrous, but actually sometimes you need to go for far away from the thing you’re making to get the most perspective and inspiration on it. Because if you’re watching things that are sort of similar the whole time, then you feel a bit cornered by style. So that was really helpful."

The Godfather wasn't the only mob movie inspo for Fleabag, with 1990's Goodfellas also being drawn from. The first scene in Fleabag season two is a family dinner party at a restaurant, similar to a scene in Goodfellas.

And, it's not a coincidence, with director Harry Bradbeer talking about channeling from both movies in the below clip:

Now we're just picturing Fleabag (who doesn't have a proper name) saying, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!" That Godfather line is actually from Part III, but you see where we're going with it.

Waller-Bridge was asked to step in and punch up the forthcoming James Bond script for 2020's No Time to Die. We are definitely excited to see if we can spot her additions during the first watch of the feature, premiering November 20.
