The period drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, with writer-director Céline Sciamma winning an award for Best Screenplay. The French film will be in U.S. theaters on December 6.

The film takes place in 1760 and revolves around a young woman named Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), who has just left a convent. Her family wants to marry her off, but having just been given her freedom, she is a reluctant bride. They commission an artist, Marianne (Noémie Merlant), to paint a portrait to send to her suitor in Milan. He will then decide if he wants to go through with the nuptials.

Héloïse has already exhausted a prior artist, so Marianne pretends to be a companion and secretly paints her portrait at night by firelight:

We're guessing... Héloïse will not be happy when she finds out she's been duped by her newfound friend. But, that may be the least of her concerns, because she might be getting married whether she likes it or not.

Possibly things won't get that far, with Héloïse saying in the above clip she dreams of "running." There are options.
