Ricky Gervais has been writing, directing and acting for a while. He’s now going back to his roots, returning to stand-up. You can look for his new special, SuperNature, heading to Netflix on May 24, reports Deadline.
Gervais was halfway through his tour in 2020, but he was forced to press pause because of the pandemic. He was then able to resume 18 months later.
In an interview with Deadline, he talks about performing live, saying, “I’m actually putting more into the show to keep it fresh, and this spate of gigs are the best gigs I’ve ever done.”
We like his confidence but wouldn’t expect anything less.

He goes on to try and figure out why it feels so good this time around, saying, “I don’t know whether that’s because I’ve been doing the same stand-up for longer than I ever have before and I keep rewriting it and keep folding the samurai sword.”
It seems like he credits it with practice: “If you do the same gig 50 times, it’s better than if you did it 10. Even if you don’t change the material, you do it better. But you do change. It evolves so it is better.”

If you didn’t catch his performance live, here’s a trailer for the upcoming special:

Gervais greets the audience by saying, “Welcome to my show. It’s not a show. There’s no dancers or jugglers. It’s basically a bloke talking, which is essentially what stand-up comedy is.”
