Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) is set to direct the biopic Kitbag, dramatizing the reign of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, with Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator) taking on the title role.

The project has found a home, with Apple Studios signed on to finance and produce the project, reports ComingSoon.net. 

Kitbag, which refers to a soldier's knapsack, puts a focus on Napoleon and his strained relationship with his wife Joséphine.

Scott talked about the story within the story, saying to Deadline, "Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything, but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Joséphine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process."

But, this is not a simple tale of love, as it will also include his battles and "ruthless climb" to Emperor.

Kitbag reunites Scott and Phoenix, who worked on 2000's Gladiator, with Scott giving praise to the actor, saying, "No actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin. He created one of movie history’s most complex Emperors in Gladiator, and we’ll create another with his Napoleon. It’s a brilliant script written by David Scarpa, and today there’s no better partner than Apple to bring a story like this to a global audience.”

You may have seen Scarpa's 2017 biopic, All the Money in the World, which depicts the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, also directed by Scott.

As this is in the early stages, a start date has yet to be announced.
