There's been some movement with the Sherlock Holmes franchise led by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
Downey Jr. and wife Susan Downey are executive producing two potential spinoff series that are in the early stages of development at HBO Max, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Each series would center on a different character introduced in the upcoming third Sherlock Holmes movie.
Downey Jr. starred as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s eponymous hero in the hit 2009 movie Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. On both occasions he was flanked by Law as Holmes’ right-hand man Dr. John Watson.
A third movie has been in the pipeline ever since, but it’s been delayed on several occasions, most recently due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Variety reported in 2019 that Rocketman’s Dexter Fletcher was in the frame to direct the long-planned “threequel.”
However, according to Deadline, the third movie currently has no release date. With the series based on the third movie, it appears all three projects are tied to one another, at least at this point. So for now, we can perhaps allow ourselves some cautious optimism about the prospect of more Sherlock Holmes, but will need to wait for a concrete update before getting too excited.
