Sophie Okonedo is a guest on the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show, which airs Friday (January 13) at 11pm EST on BBC America. As she discusses on the show, Okonedo is a highly acclaimed, Tony-winning stage actress, but she has also made serious waves on screen. Ahead of her appearance, here's a reminder of eight of her greatest TV and movie roles.

1. Hotel Rwanda (2004)

Okonedo earned an Oscar nomination for her powerful performance in this hard-hitting biopic. She plays Tatiana Rusesabagina, the wife of hotelier Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), who helped to save more than 1,000 people during the 1994 Rwandan genocide by creating a safe space on their premises. Alternating between terror and courage, with the latter winning out, Okonedo is really incredible here.

2. Mrs. Mandela (2010)

Okonedo more than earned her BAFTA nomination for her work in this BBC TV movie. She portrays Winnie Mandela, wife of Nelson Mandela, over a 40-year-old period in which she evolves from an unassuming social worker into a formidable activist whose own moral code is irrevocably compromised. Mrs. Mandela was written by Peter Moffat, who went on to create the hit Bryan Cranston series Your Honor.

3. Doctor Who (2010)

Okonedo has a fun guest role in season five as Liz 10/Queen Elizabeth, the ruler of a spaceship taking the U.K.'s population to safety after solar flares make Earth uninhabitable. Brandishing a gun and going undercover to find out what's what, Okonedo's futuristic monarch is very different from her real-life namesake.  "I'm the bloody Queen mate," she says at one point, "and basically I rule."

4. The Slap (2011)

Adapted from Christos Tsiolkas's best-selling book, this gripping miniseries follows the shockwaves sent out when a man slaps someone else's child at a suburban barbecue in Melbourne. Okonedo plays Aisha, the hostess of the gathering, who appears to have an enviable life but is actually harboring concerns about the future of her marriage to successful but secretive Hector (Jonathan LaPaglia).

5. Wild Rose (2018)

This awesome British film features a breakout performance from Jessie Buckley, who plays a struggling lone mother from Glasgow who dreams of being a country singer. Okonedo offers rock-solid support as Susannah, an affluent local woman who gives Rose a cleaning job and ends up championing her singing career as both a fan and friend. It's a stirring watch that's well worth seeking out.

6. Ratched (2020)

Okonedo gives a searing performance in this Netflix miniseries starring Sarah Paulson as the notoriously cruel Nurse Ratched. She plays Charlotte Wells, a patient at Ratched's hospital in Northern California who has developed dissociative identity disorder (DID) as a result of deeply traumatizing racism and abuse. It's a psychologically complex role for which Okonedo picked up an Emmy nomination.

7. Criminal: UK (2021)

Okonedo earned another BAFTA nomination for her work in season two of this Netflix police procedural series. She stars in the opening episode as Julia, a woman who had to watch while her husband, a murderer, had inappropriate relationships with his male students. She gives a creepy and surprising performance that will keep you guessing until the very end of the episode.

8. Death on the Nile (2022)

Everyone's a suspect in Kenneth Branagh's all-star Agatha Christie adaptation. Bouncing nicely off Letitia Wright, who plays her character's daughter, Okonedo brings glamour and intrigue as the renowned jazz singer Salome Otterbourne. Her part is actually a slight reimagining of Salome, who was portrayed by Angela Lansbury in the 1978 Death on the Nile movie as an erotic novelist.
