Russell T Davies acted as Doctor Who showrunner from 2005 – 2010, also writing each episode during that time period. He’s now set to make his return, which we can look for in 2023 with the 60th anniversary episode.

In the past, Davies has said he had no plans to revisit the sci-fi series, but... plans can change.
In a recent interview with the RadioTimes, Davies explains how his return came about, saying, “The truth of it is, everyone lies when they leave Doctor Who and says 'Oh, I've moved on!’ I've been thinking about it since I was three, so there's no way you stop thinking about it."
It is a beloved series and a lot of people have grown up with the Doctor, including Davies.
We can feel his excitement bouncing off the page, with him going on to say, “There are things coming up that are brand new ways of telling stories that have never been done before, so it just feels new. I wouldn't have gone back if it wasn't feeling new.”
Davies has already gotten a head start, working on new DW episodes, which he talked about last year.
In the aforementioned interview, he also expands on the writing process and his own takeaway: “I'm sitting here now, 10 pages away from a climax thinking, 'God, I've never been in this territory before, this is strange and new and hopefully I'll learn something out of it.”
Davies has worked on 34 programs and doesn’t like “continuing series,” referencing the 2021 miniseries It’s a Sin.
But, Doctor Who isn’t one of them, with Davies ending on this note, saying, “I just like looking at a new set of challenges every time and another blank page, but Doctor Who is always a blank page.”

That is one of the best things about writing, creating something from nothing.
We look forward to seeing more from this talented writer and showrunner.
Until then, here’s a peek at his latest project:

Can you believe we're heading into the 60th anniversary of DW? Wowser!
