Sir Billy Connolly is to receive BAFTA's highest accolade, its Fellowship, at the upcoming TV Awards. The British Association of Film and Television Arts organization made the announcement today via press release.
He follows in the footsteps of previous recipients including Sir David Attenborough, Dame Julie Walters and Dame Joanna Lumley in being awarded the Fellowship, which recognizes "an individual's outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television, or games across their career."
Connolly said in a statement: "I am deeply honored. Fifty films and… I can't remember how many TV shows – as well as my stage comedy – added up to something that's a joy to look back on. A lovely thing. I have no regrets at all. I had no idea the Fellowship existed, but I'm told it’s a big deal! (Laughs). It’s lovely to be recognized and to become a jolly good fellow."
This isn't the first time Connolly's remarkable career has been recognized by BAFTA. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award back in 2002 and a prize for Outstanding Achievement in Television and Film from BAFTA Scotland in 2012. And of course, in 2017 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to entertainment and charity.
Connolly will receive his Fellowship at the BAFTA TV Awards in London this Sunday (May 8), which is being hosted by Richard Ayoade.
