Sir Lenny Henry and Russell T Davies are teaming up for a new TV series inspired by Henry's own mother.

Titled Three Little Birds, the series will center on three women who move to the U.K. from the Caribbean during the 1950s. Henry's parents Winston and Winifred emigrated to Britain during this period as members of the "Windrush generation." Their name is derived from Empire Windrush, the ship that brought one of the first groups of Caribbean migrants to the U.K. in 1948.

Davies will serve as a script consultant and executive producer on the series, which has been written by Henry. It will follow the three women as they arrive in London before deciding to move to the Midlands, where Henry grew up, to build a new life for themselves in a very challenging social climate.

A fresh spotlight has been shone on the racism and discrimination faced by many members of the Windrush generation since the 2018 Windrush scandal, when it emerged that the British government had wrongly deported or threatened to deport dozens of their descendants born in the U.K. as British citizens.

“My mother spoke often about how difficult life was back in the day when she first arrived in Britain to begin her new life," Henry said in a press release sent to Deadline. “The stories she told and indeed the narratives my brothers and sisters beguiled me with over the dinner table made me think about writing a fictional account of three Caribbean women; all with differing yet complementary attributes."

He added: “Although these are fictional accounts, my mother’s narrative will run throughout these stories and hopefully, the stories of other post-Windrush arrivals will trigger memories, smiles and tears too.”

The series is in the works at U.K. network ITV.
