Sir Michael Caine Confirms He Hasn't Retired from Acting
Fans of Sir Michael Caine can breathe a huge sigh of relief because the 88-year-old actor has confirmed that he hasn't, in fact, retired from acting.
Reports of Caine stepping back from acting started to gain traction Friday (October 15) after he was interviewed on the BBC radio program Kermode and Mayo's Film Review, Variety reports. During the interview, he appeared to suggest his role as a cantankerous novelist in the recent movie Best Sellers was something of a swansong.
"Funnily enough, it has turned out to be my last part, really," he said. "Because I haven't worked for two years, and I have a spine problem which affects my leg, so I can't walk very well. And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and successful. So, I’m now not an actor; I’m a writer. Which is lovely because as an actor, you have to get up at half past six in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed!"
However, Caine has since clarified these comments, telling Variety: "Regarding retirement, I’ve spent over 50 years getting up at 6 a.m. to make movies, and I'm not getting rid of my alarm clock!" He also referenced the confusion playfully on Twitter by tweeting: "I haven’t retired and not a lot of people know that."According to IMDb, Caine actually has three movies in the pipeline: Now You See Me 3, the indie dramedy The Great Escaper with Glenda Jackson, and the historical epic Medieval. So, it seems we’ll definitely be getting at least a few more opportunities to enjoy watching him on screen.
