'Spitting Image' Reboot Renewed by BritBox for a Second Season

The reboot of iconic British satirical series Spitting Image has been renewed for a second season.

Commissioned by BritBox in the U.K., the revival series debuted there last Saturday (October 3). In the U.S., it premiered a day later on Facebook Premiere after a prospective broadcast deal with NBC fell through. Executive producer Jon Thoday told The Times of London that there was "too much nervousness" at the network about the way the show pokes fun at politicians and other high-profile figures.

The reboot uses puppets to satirize the exploits of politicians including President Donald Trump, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, as well as members of the British Royal Family, and famous faces including Piers Morgan, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian.

In the U.K., BritBox has reported that Spitting Image prompted a "ten-fold spike" in new subscribers when it premiered last weekend. So, it's no great surprise that a second season has been commissioned to premiere in fall 2021. In the meantime, new episodes will continue to launch weekly on BritBox in the U.K. and Facebook Premiere in the U.S. for the next nine weeks.

BritBox's Reemah Sakaan said of the renewal: “The fantastic response to Spitting Image just goes to show how much the world needs public service satire. Not only can subscribers look forward to another 9 weeks of anarchy but also now another series in 2021.”

BritBox announced earlier this year that it was reviving Spitting Image after nearly 25 years off air. The show originally ran between 1984 and 1996 on the U.K. network ITV – co-founder of BritBox alongside the BBC – winning 10 BAFTA TV Awards and two Emmys for its biting topical comedy.
