10 Things You Never Knew About Stanley Tucci
Stanley Tucci isn't just a great actor who's shone in everything from The Devil Wears Prada to the Hunger Games franchise. He's also a sharply dressed charmer who's always a pleasure to watch on chat shows. With his new movie Jolt opening Friday (July 23), we are rounding up a few things you might not know about him.
1. He is married to literary agent Felicity Blunt – older sister of his The Devil Wears Prada co-star Emily Blunt.
The couple wed in 2012 and now live in Barnes, a leafy village suburb in west London. Discussing how he adjusted to London after spending the first 50 years of his life in the U.S., Tucci told the Evening Standard: "I love it, it's a great city — just driving around today, you just look over, and say, oh my God, look at the architecture, look at the Thames, it's incredible. It's a very high-functioning city, it has so much to offer, the cultural diversity is amazing, the NHS is an amazing thing. It's great. It was a very easy transition for me. Once I’d figured how to top up my Oyster card [for the London Underground]."
2. As a teenager, he worked as a maintenance person at a summer camp in Westchester, NY.
Tucci recalled one of the least appealing parts of the job – the so-called "s**t-hooking" – during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. As you might expect, this clip includes some pretty salty language.
3. He's a keen mixologist.
Tucci's cocktail-making videos delighted the internet during last year's Coronavirus lockdown. During another appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the actor revealed that he even brings a shaker onto his movie sets so he can make martinis for cast and crew. What a guy.
4. He's written a couple cookbooks.
The second of these, The Tucci Table: Cooking With Family and Friends, which he co-wrote with wife Felicity, was published in 2014. According to the publishers' blurb, it includes "recipes from [Tucci's] traditional Italian roots as well as those of his British wife, Felicity Blunt, tied together with a modern American ribbon." Think everything from pasta alla bottarga to mushroom-stuffed trout and pork chops with onions and mustard sauce. Yum.
5. He's cooked with one of his most famous co-stars: Meryl Streep.
The two actors rustled up a delicious two-course meal before portraying celebrity chef Julia Child and her husband Paul Cushing Child in a Nora Ephron movie. "I was due to make Julie & Julia with Meryl Streep, so I called her up," Tucci recalled in an interview with The Guardian. "I said, 'I don't mean to get too methody on you, Meryl, but we need to cook together.' So we went out shopping, then made blanquette de veau and a tarte tatin at her apartment."
6. Before his acting career really took off, he also worked as a fashion model.
His most notable modeling assignment? This '80s TV commercial for Levi's 501 jeans. During a recent interview with GQ, Tucci said he was paid $300 for his work on the ad.
7. He's been nominated for each of the leading awards in film, TV, recording, and theater.
Tucci is a 10-time Emmy nominee (and three-time winner), an Oscar nominee, a Tony nominee, and perhaps most surprisingly, a Grammy nominee. Alongside Streep, he was nominated in 2007 for the Best Spoken Word Album for Children prize for his work on The One and Only Shrek. Sadly, the two actors were pipped by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
8. Tragically, he lost his first wife, Kathryn Spath-Tucci, to breast cancer in 2009.
Asked by The Guardian to whom he would most like to apologize, Tucci replied candidly: "My late wife – she died of cancer. We tried everything we could do to save her. I wish that I could have done more and that I could have been with her at the moment she passed away. I couldn’t be in that room, because I knew it would be so devastating that I wouldn’t be able to take care of the kids after."
9. Colin Firth, with whom he stars in this year's romantic drama movie Supernova, is one of his best friends.
"We've known each other for so long. We've wanted to work together again. We've worked together twice before," Tucci told GQ when discussing the movie. "We're extremely close and we live pretty close to each other. Our kids are friends. I was just like, 'Oh, my God, this is the perfect thing for us to do together.' I just think he's an extraordinary actor. He's funny, he's charming, but he also has incredible depth and facility."
10. He helped to develop an Italian restaurant in Croton Falls, NY.
The restaurant is now called Primavera, but according to the website, it was known as Finch Tavern during Tucci's tenure. "I was involved in a restaurant; I helped put it together," Tucci told Cigar Aficionado in 2013. "Everyone thought it was mine but it wasn't. And I wasn’t as involved as I liked. I still want to do that, to open a little restaurant of my own."
If and when it happens, we'll definitely be calling up for a reservation.
