This will not be Steven Moffat’s first time working on a series that revolves around a time traveler, having been showrunner for the fan favorite Doctor Who from 2009-2017.
Moffat is set to turn Audrey Niffenegger’s 2003 novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife, into a series by the same name, for HBO.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he gave viewers a heads up, not to expect any similarities between the two series, saying, “It bears no resemblance to anything I’ve done in terms of time travel before.”
Moffat even takes it upon himself to explain how time travel is utilized in each story, saying, “Doctor Who loves time traveling, and mainly it’s just the bus seat they get on to arrive at their next adventure. Here, Audrey is saying to her reader, ‘Keep up. This is the story of a man living his life in the wrong order, and I’m not necessarily going to tell it in the right order.’”
We’ve never really thought about time travel in that way, that it can have different purposes.
While fictional, WHO knows, that may not always be the case… (being fictional, that is).
Moffat does a fine job explaining what’s going on in The Time Traveler’s Wife, but we'll step in to fill in some of the blanks. The storyline follows a man who is diagnosed with a disorder that results in “his genetic clock being re-set.” He finds himself returning to impactful moments that have already transpired in the past or are about to happen in the future…
His wife is aware of his ability to time travel and grows accustomed to him popping in and out of her life.
This isn’t the first time Moffat has overlapped with Niffenegger, using The Time Traveler’s Wife as inspiration for the Doctor Who episode “The Girl in the Fireplace.”
There's no premiere date for The Time Traveler's Wife, but it's predicted for 2022.
