There's been talk of making Glen A. Larson's 1978 sci-fi TV series Battlestar Galactica into a movie since 2009, and now there's been a major shift.

It's just been announced that Simon Kinberg (Dark Phoenix) is set to write the script, reports The Hollywood Reporter. 

Kinberg released a statement about signing on to the project, saying, "Battlestar Galactica is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring.”

The movie is based on the original series, which ran from 1978-1979. But, some viewers may be more familiar with the 2004 remake that ran through 2009, starring Edward James Olmos, Jamie Bamber and Katee Sackhoff (originally airing on SyFy, ultimately landing on BBC America in 2011).

The story revolves around the last survivors of the human race, who live on a fleet of ships searching for a fabled planet, promising salvation, aka Earth. All the while avoiding a killer AI race, known as Cylons, who are difficult, if not impossible, to detect, because they can disguise themselves like their human counterparts.

In 2018, The Hunger Games' Francis Lawrence was signed on to direct. But, he's now referred to as being previously attached, according to ComingSoon.net.

We have the writer. At this point, we need a director. Oh... and the cast.
