Charles Dickens was such a compelling and evocative storyteller that his work has its own adjective: "Dickensian." More than 150 years after his death in 1870, the Victorian writer continues to win new fans with iconic novels like Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House and Little Dorrit. There always seems to be a new Dickens adaptation in the works, too: the BBC has recently announced a new Great Expectations miniseries with Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham.
With this in mind, here's a reminder of some of Dickens' most poignant, profound, and funny quotes, and the novel they appear in:
"A day wasted on others is not wasted on one's self." A Tale of Two Cities
"The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again." Nicholas Nickleby
"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another." Our Mutual Friend
"Family not only needs to consist of merely those whom we share blood, but also of those whom we'd give blood." Mugby Junction
"Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts." Great Expectations
"One always begins to forgive a place as soon as it's left behind." Little Dorrit
"Ask no questions and you’ll be told no lies." Great Expectations
"Trifles make the sum of life." Great Expectations
"Great men are seldom over-scrupulous in the arrangement of their attire." The Pickwick Papers
"Vices are sometimes only virtues carried to excess!" Dombey and Sons
"A loving heart is better and stronger than wisdom." David Copperfield
"The most important thing in life is to stop saying, ‘I wish’ and start saying, 'I will.' Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities." David Copperfield
"It is a melancholy truth that even great men have their poor relations." Bleak House
"There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts." Oliver Twist
"It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good-humor." Great Expectations
"A word in earnest is as good as a speech." Bleak House
"There are talkers enough among us; I’ll be one of the doers." Barnaby Rudge
"'Never,' said my aunt, 'be mean in anything; never be false; never be cruel. Avoid those three vices, Trot, and I can always be hopeful of you.'" Great Expectations
"It is an old prerogative of kings to govern everything but their passions." The Pickwick Papers
"Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts." Our Mutual Friend
