More than two centuries after her death, Jane Austen remains one of our most beloved novelists. Her timeless writing exploring love, marriage, and social class in 19th century England continues to charm new generations, helped by some incredibly popular TV and movie adaptations. In the 1990s, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet starred in an Oscar-winning film of Sense and Sensibility, while Colin Firth portrayed Mr. Darcy in the fan favorite BBC miniseries. More recently, we've seen Anya Taylor-Joy in Emma, Kate Beckinsale in Love and Friendship, and Rose Williams in Sanditon, which has recently returned for its second season on PBS.
Quite simply, Austen's wit and wisdom never get old, so we've put together this handy list of some of her wittiest and most pertinent quotes and the novel where you can find it:
"It isn't what we we say or think that defines us, but what we do." Sense and Sensibility
"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." Northanger Abbey
"Life seems but a quick succession of busy nothings.” Mansfield Park
"I am afraid that the pleasantness of an employment does not always evince its propriety." Sense and Sensibility
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." Pride and Prejudice
"Ah! There is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort." Emma
"Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance." Pride and Prejudice
"Selfishness must always be forgiven, you know, because there is no hope of a cure." Mansfield Park
"My idea of good company is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company." Persuasion.
"It is very difficult for the prosperous to be humble." Emma
"Nobody minds having what is too good for them." Mansfield Park
"Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us." Pride and Prejudice
"Vanity working on a weak head, produces every sort of mischief." Emma
"I will not torment myself any longer by remaining among friends whose society it is impossible to enjoy." Sense and Sensibility
"Nothing ever fatigues me, but doing what I do not like." Mansfield Park
"To flatter and follow others, without being flattered and followed in turn, is but a state of half enjoyment." Persuasion
"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid." Northanger Abbey
"There is no charm equal to tenderness of heart." Emma
