Tom Hiddleston, Jake Gyllenhaal and Audra McDonald Receive Nominations for 74th Tony Awards

Tom Hiddleston, Jake Gyllenhaal and Audra McDonald are among the actors who have received nominations for the 74th Tony Awards.

Hiddleston will compete against Gyllenhaal for the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play prize. The Brit is nominated for his performance in a revival of Harold Pinter's Betrayal, while Gyllenhaal is up for his role in the second of two one-act monologues presented as Sea Wall/A Life.

McDonald – who has already won six Tony Awards, more than any other performer – is nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her role in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. Her fellow nominees in the category are Laura Linney (My Name Is Lucy Barton), Mary-Louise Parker (The Sound Inside), and Joaquina Kalukango (Slave Play).

Several categories at this year's Tony Awards have fewer nominations than normal because the Broadway theater season was cut short due to coronavirus. According to The New York Times, just 18 shows were eligible to compete for this year's awards.

As a result, Moulin Rouge! The Musical's Aaron Tveit is the sole nominee in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical category. He'll win the award if 60% of voters tick "yes" over "no" in an affirmative ballot.

Overall, Jagged Little Pill, a musical featuring the songs of Alanis Morisette written by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer's Body), leads the way with 15 nominations, followed by Moulin Rouge! The Musical with 14.

The 74th Tony Awards ceremony was originally scheduled to be held on June 7 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, before being postponed due to coronavirus. It will now take place virtually later this year at a date that's yet to be announced.
