Keeping Up Appearances fans are paying tribute to Josephine Tewson, the actress who appeared in the classic BBC sitcom as Elizabeth, shaky neighbor of Patricia Routledge's domineering Hyacinth Bucket.
As the BBC reports, Tewson's agent announced Friday (August 19) that the veteran actress had passed away a day earlier at Denville Hall, a London retirement home for actors and other people who worked in the entertainment industry.
From 1990 to 1995, Tewson starred in all five seasons of Keeping Up Appearance as Elizabeth Warden, who is often summoned for a rather nerve-wracking cup of tea at Hyacinth's house. Fans will have fond memories of Elizabeth desperately trying not to break Hyacinth's fancy "Royal Doulton" tea cups. You can relive some of her most memorable scenes in this compilation video made by BritBox.
Tewson also appeared in another hugely popular BBC sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine, from 2003 to 2010. She played Lucinda Davenport, a librarian who is introduced as a friend of Bernard Cribbins' character Gavin Hinchcliffe.
Earlier in her career, she became a frequent collaborator of British comedy great Ronnie Barker, appearing in many episodes of his 1970s sketch show The Two Ronnies and co-starring in 1988's Clarence, his final sitcom. Tewson also worked extensively on stage and in 2012 toured the U.K. with a one-woman show called Still Keeping Up Appearances?.
British TV channel Gold, which regularly shows episodes of Keeping Up Appearances and Last of the Summer Wine, hailed the late actress as "much loved."
