The first trailer for Christopher Nolan's latest movie Oppenheimer has arrived, and it puts the focus firmly on Cillian Murphy's title character.

Murphy stars in the historical thriller as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physics professor who is generally credited as the "father of the atomic bomb." The movie follows him as he undertakes research during World War II's "Manhattan Project" that will ultimately lead to the creation of the first nuclear weapons.

"We imagine a future and our imaginings horrify," Murphy's Oppenheimer says in the trailer, setting up the terrifying ethical dilemma at the heart of the movie. "They would fear it until they understand it, and they won't understand it until they’ve used it. Theory will only take you so far. I don’t know if we can be trusted with such a weapon but we have no choice."

Oppenheimer is Nolan's follow-up to 2020's Sci-Fi thriller Tenet. As ever, the director has attracted an incredible cast that includes Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, and Gary Oldman.

Blunt is playing the title character's wife, Katherine Oppenheimer, an eminent biologist, while Pugh is portraying influential psychiatrist Jean Tatlock. The film is based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It's due in theaters on July 31, 2023.
