Some movies set in the music world can be kind of corny, but the first trailer for I Used to Be Famous offers a glimpse at a grittier story.
Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) stars as Vince, a washed-up former boyband star who forms an unlikely musical partnership with Stevie (Leo Long, making his screen debut), a teenage drummer who happens to be autistic.
The trailer for the London-set film suggests Vince and Stevie aren't always on the same page when it comes to pursuing their musical dreams. In particular, Stevie's mother (The Walking Dead's Eleanor Matsuura) appears to have doubts about Vince's motivations.
I Used to Be Famous is directed by Eddie Sternberg, who adapted it from his 2015 short film of the same name. The director told Variety that he was inspired to write this story after reading about real-life boyband members who "had so much success at such a young age, and an excess of sex, drugs, rock and roll," but then got "chewed up and spat out" and left to "deal with that void."
To add to its authenticity, I Used To Be Famous features original songs by Hannah Reid and Dan Rothman of chart-topping British band London Grammar. It opens in select U.K. theaters September 9 before streaming on Netflix globally from September 16.
